Homemade dehumidifier
High humidity can be an irritating environmental pest that may cause your wall paint to flake off, stain your wall and encourage fungus growth in badly ventilated areas around your house. In these times, a homemade dehumidifier would come in handy if you are looking for a cost saving solution.
There are 2 common methods to make a dehumidifier from scratch. These DIY attempts are easy and the materials needed can be conveniently sourced from your house.
The first method requires a lidded container like coffee can or Pringles® chip can and some charcoal blocks. Drill few holes on the lid. The larger the size of your container, the more holes you should create on the lid. Then, fill the container with a reasonable amount of charcoal blocks before closing the lid. Your homemade dehumidifier is now ready for use. Place the container in humid places like the basement and the bathroom. Remember to replace the charcoal supply every month so that the charcoal blocks can absorb moisture optimally. If you use wood charcoal, your dehumidifier would have a longer shelf life as the charcoal only needs to be replaced once a year.
The other method uses slightly more complicated tools like 2 buckets, a stand, some mesh and rock salt. Rock salt is the main ingredient as it is strong moisture absorbent. Kick off the project by drilling a hole at the bottom of one bucket and covering the hole with a mesh. Fill the bucket with rock salt and place it over a stand so that its position is raised above another bucket. Align the position of the buckets to direct the flow of moisture captured by the rock salt through the hole into the bucket beneath. You can have a fan blowing towards the bucket as the fan will help to draw more air into the bucket to be dehumidified at a faster pace.
