Silica gel is used to absorb water from a gaseous environment; the water absorbing capacity is usually around 25% by weight. When used to absorb water, an indicator may be added which is blue in the dry state and pink when the gel is saturated with water. Such a gel is usually described as “self-indicating”. The gel can be regenerated by heating in an oven to a temperature of around 150 C. Not hazardous according to Directive 67/548/EEC. However, chronic exposure to the dust may be harmful and may cause an allergic respiratory reaction. It is non-hazardous for air, sea and road freight.

This product contains synthetic amorphous silica, not to be confused with crystalline silica such as quartz, cristobalite or tridymite or with diatomaceous earth or other naturally occurring forms of amorphous silica that frequently contain crystalline forms. It may cause dryness and irritation to mucous membranes, nose, and throat. Symptoms may include coughing, sore throat, and wheezing. Repeated exposure may cause symptoms similar to those listed for acute effects.

Silica gel is a granular, vitreous, porous form of silica made synthetically from sodium silicate. Despite its name, silica gel is a solid. It is a naturally occurring mineral that is purified and processed into either granular or beaded form. As a desiccant, it has an average pore size of 2.4 nanometers and has a strong affinity for water molecules. Silica gel is non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-reactive and stable with ordinary usage. It will react with hydrogen fluoride, fluorine, oxygen difluoride, chlorine trifluoride, strong acids, strong bases, and oxidizers. Silica gel is irritating to the respiratory tract and may cause irritation of the digestive tract, and dust from the beads may cause irritation to the skin and eyes, so precautions should be taken.
